Description:

Welcome to the Screening, Triage, and Assessment course, the fifth of six courses in the Virginia (VA) Youth Mobile Crisis Responder (MCR) Training.

Just like the previous courses you have completed in the VA MCR training, this course includes real‑world scenarios and time for hands‑on application of skills. It also includes pre‑work that should have been competed before today’s session, as well as post‑work to continue the learning outside of the classroom.

This course discusses your responsibility, as an MCR, for screening, triage, and assessment. It is important for you to effectively screen and assess youth, to determine the best options to keep the youth safe, and to start the youth/family on the path to healing.

Objective:

·         List six different types of mental health crises.

·         List different risk and protective factors for youth and their families, including cultural and familial factors.

·         Describe the importance of rapport building.

·         Demonstrate an ability to use effective interview techniques in assessing risk.

·         Explain triage techniques based on the screening and processes from the VA Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS).

·         Differentiate between suicidal ideation (SI), suicidal intent, and non‑suicidal self‑injury (NSSI).

·         Gather information to differentiate between the substance use, misuse, and abuse history of a youth.

·         Describe the process of making disposition decisions for a youth in crisis via three evidence‑based assessment and screening tools (i.e., PHQ‑9, C-SSRS, and CALOCUS).

·         Recognize triggers caused by the assessment and re‑telling of a story.

·         Differentiate between assessment and therapy.
